For centuries cultures from all over the globe have used essential oils to treat and cure ailments. There are more than 90 essential oils and each has its own health benefits, many oils blend well together and most share in their therapeutic benefits. This natural way of healing is now being explored by the scientific community for the treatment of a variety of diseases like asthma, heart strokes, cancer, bronchitis and many more.
Essential oils are not to be confused with fragrance oils. Fragrance oils are artificially produced in a lab, contain synthetic chemicals and are used solely for their smell. Essential oils are derived from plants, can be absorbed through the skin or inhaled (aromatherapy) and contain therapeutic benefits such as pain relief, relaxation, and stress reduction, relief of anxiety, help with depression, skin issues, intestinal issues, stretch marks, treatment of allergies and much more.
Because essential oils are not actual oils (they lack fatty acids) and are highly concentrated plant components, they should never be applied directly to the skin. Essential oils should always be blended in small doses in carrier oils, soaps, burned in a diffuser, dropped in bath water, or used in body scrubs, butters and tea baths. When buying essential oils look for high grade and organic whenever possible. This may cost more, but value matters when it comes to these oils. The purity of the oil is important and depending on the plant it can take several hundreds and even thousands of pounds to create the oil.
Be sure to always research your oils before buying and have fun exploring your essential oil blends!
